Arsenal look set to miss out on Real Sociedad’s Carlos Vela after the club’s president revealed that the player wants to stay where he is.

The Gunners reportedly activated the £3.5m buy-back clause in their former star’s contract recently, and were expected to tie up a deal swiftly to kick off their summer transfer plans.

Arsenal sold Vela to the Spaniards in 2012, but insisted that a fee be put in place to bring him back to north London should he find his form after a difficult few years in English football.

The Mexican attacker has since responded, netting 16 goals and registering 12 assists last season to establish himself as one of La Liga’s top talents outside of the title contending teams.

Despite talk that a swoop is all but wrapped up, Sociedad president Jokin Apperibay says that Vela has no desire to return to the Emirates Stadium:

“We are fortunate that the player is keen to stay in San Sebastian with us and that’s an important factor for Real Sociedad,” he is quoted by The Metro.

Vela spent almost seven years as an Arsenal player, but failed to live up to the reputation he gained in his homeland with Chivas Guadalajara in that time.
