Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes

Arsene Wenger may need to look elsewhere if he hopes to sign a new goalkeeper, as Victor Valdes, a longtime target of the Arsenal boss, has hinted he would prefer a move to big spenders Monaco, according to the Daily Mail.

Wenger’s distrust in his current shot stopper Wojciech Szeszny became evident at the end of last season when the Pole was dropped in favour of Lukasz Fabianski.

Valdes has confirmed that he will leave Barcelona when his contract runs out in 11 months, and the Londoners long looked to be leading the race for his signature, but recent quotes from the Spanish international on how he admires the French league has tipped the scale in a different direction.

“Ligue 1 attracts me a lot – Monaco or elsewhere in France,” Valdes said.

Monaco have spent big since being promoted last season, and have brought in names like Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez, spending a grand total of £146.256.000 in the process.

Former Barcelona full-back, Eric Abidal, is captaining the principality club, and the goalkeeper said he would relish an opportunity to play alongside his old teammate again.

“I know that Abidal is very happy at Monaco and I am good friends with him,” he added.

“To go back and play at his side again could be very special.”
