The 10 things Arsene Wenger ‘must do this transfer window’
It’s comical, in a way, that every January transfer window is the most important in Arsene Wenger’s time at Arsenal. The club’s current position is no laughing matter, however—and I’m not necessarily talking about their league position.
The manager has indicated that he’s been given much more freedom this January to go out and strengthen, while there have also been suggestions that the board are very keen for Wenger to go into the market and spend some cash.
In similar ways to last season, this is Wenger’s worst squad he’s had since taking over at the club. It’s a squad that has deficiencies all over the pitch and who look mentally drained, although the source of that particular problem remains up for debate.
Andrey Arshavin’s purchase in January 2009 helped push Arsenal to a top four finish that season when it seemed unlikely. His star name, the quality and confidence he brought to the team and his impact in big matches made a noticeable difference. You simply can’t dismiss the importance players like that have on a struggling team. You can, however, go out and purchase them for the right price.
With a new year and the promise of a new shirt sponsorship deal with Emirates on the horizon, Wenger simply must go out and put this team right.
