Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is stuck in footballing limbo at the moment. He was once the Gunners’ jewel in their defensive crown, but a combination of some substandard performances and the successes of centre-back partnership Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker has pushed the Belgian down the pecking order in North London, and he’s now a regular benchwarmer, having made just three first team appearances so far this season.

Arsene Wenger is keen to keep a hold of the 27 year-old, who provides crucial depth at the back for the Gunners as they chase down the Premier League title this season, but with the 2014 World Cup just around the corner, Vermaelen has admitted he’s considering leaving the Emirates in January to cement his position in Marc Wilmots’ Belgium squad.

With that in mind, here’s FIVE clubs from across Europe who could snap up the £10million-rated centre-back in January.
