Per MertesackerArsenal defender Per Mertesacker has revealed the reasoning behind the side’s improved defending and hopes that it’s come in time to salvage their bid for Champions League qualification.

The Gunners’ defenders were so embarrassed by their performance during their defeat away to Tottenham earlier in the month that they decided to have a private video viewing of the game in question. Since the showdown Arsenal have kept successive clean sheets, recording a 2-0 win away at Swansea and impressive 2-0 win away in Germany as they beat Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

“We all had that feeling after the Tottenham game that there was something to do, so everybody was involved and everyone felt we needed to improve and speak,” Mertesacker told The Guardian.

“We watch the previous game back before every game but the defenders did it on our own and I thought there was quite an improvement against Swansea.

“We saw ourselves as a unit on the television and I think it was a good thing to do because sometimes you have a different view on the pitch and you feel different.”

Arsenal find themselves just a point away from the Champions League qualification places but have a game in hand over third placed Spurs.
