Vermaelen stands by Arsene Wenger
Thomas Vermaelen has leapt to the defence of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, insisting that he is the “right man for the job.”
After slipping out of the title race, being eliminated from both the FA and Capital One Cups and seeing his team lose the first-leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with Bayern Munich, the French coach’s position has come under major scrutiny.
Many pundits and fans are adamant that Wenger’s time in North London should be brought to an abrupt halt, with the club appearing to be moving in the wrong direction.
However, Vermaelen insists that the whole squad are firmly behind their manager and called upon his team-mates to help to improve the club’s on-field fortunes:
“Of course we’re behind him, he’s done a lot for this club. He still does a lot of hard work with us. He is the right man for the job.” He is quoted by The Mirror.
“We have to show it on the pitch as well. At the moment the results are not good. But we will work hard with him to get the results back.”
The Belgian international went on to state that he is surprised by the treatment Wenger is receiving, after all of the work he has done for the Gunners through the years:
“Yeah, I am actually.” Vermaelen responded when asked if he was shocked by the criticism.
“Everyone in football looks too short term. They don’t look at the long term, and he’s done a lot for this club.
“You have to look at the long term. He is the right man for this club and we are all behind him.”
