Wenger hints at Walcott stay
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the club are looking to keep hold of their star players, hinting that Theo Walcott is set to stay.
The England international has been heavily linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks, with a breakdown in contract negotiations alerting the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.
However, reports have emerged recently the Wenger is willing to break his strict wage structure to reward the attacker with a £90,000-per-week deal to stay at the Emirates Stadium.
The Frenchman stated that there will be no more players leaving the club in January, and hinted that plans are in place to keep Walcott as well as strengthening other areas of his squad:
“I don’t envisage any other departures at the moment unless others come in.” he is quoted by The Daily Mail.
“On that front we are working very hard – I won’t give you numbers or names of players, and I don’t want to give false hope, but we are trying.”
Walcott is said to be requesting guarantees over his role within the Gunners’ squad as well as receiving a rise on his basic wage.
The 23-year-old is believed to be keen on establishing himself as a centre-forward, after becoming frustrated at being deployed out wide.
In recent times he has been operating as the focal point of the attack, turning in some impressive displays.
This has tempted Wenger to make him one of the highest earners at the club and avoid losing him to a Premier League rival.
