Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is hopeful of signing Barcelona ace David Villa in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mirror.

Wenger is desperate to add a striker to his Gunners squad with summer arrivals Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolksi failing to find their goalscoring form of previous seasons.

Theo Walcott has been playing as a lone striker in recent weeks and has done well, but his on-going contract discussion must be an issue for Wenger.

Villa may be available for as little as £15million as he has struggled to push his way back into Barcelona’s talented squad after a serious injury last season.

The likes of Marouane Chamakh and Johan Djourou have been allowed to leave North London on loan this week and the likes of Andrey Arshavin and Sebastien Squillaci are set to follow to allow room in Wenger’s big squad.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool are all also said to be interested in the Spanish striker, but only on a loan basis.

Surely not, Aged 31 ? We would be writing off some £4m per year … before his sky high wages wages. If he’s paid say £5m per year (or more) … it would cost approx. £35m. over 4 years. Plus he has never played in EPL …. which might take him the rest of 2012/13 to get used to.

What a 31yr old injury prone striker? Is Wenger mad? How many yrs is he gonna offer Villa……it’s a shame unless on loan.

If Van Persie was with us now it would be cost more in wages, there’s a year in difference regarding age, Van Persie is more injury prone and Villa scores for fun like Van Persie … yet you would all jump at the chance to have Van Persie back. Villa is getting 120k per week for 3 years. That’s 30k pw less than Van Persies demand.
