The goalkeeping position is certainly Arsene Wenger’s weakest area of expertise, failing numerous times to offer Arsenal a player of the necessary standard. But it should be said that despite his popularity and obvious quality, Jens Lehmann really was an inspired signing by Wenger.
How does any club replace a player like David Seaman? How does any club go on to then capture a league title whilst going undefeated? It should be looked back as incredible from both the manager and Lehmann that the German was able to have such an impact so quickly.
As Wojciech Szczesny is a product of the Arsenal youth team, Lehmann can certainly be viewed as the only time Wenger got it right with the purchase of a goalkeeper.
