Real Madrid midfielder Xabi AlonsoReal Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has insisted that he is keen to stay in the Spanish capital, despite interest from Chelsea and Liverpool.

The 32-year-old playmaker has been linked with a return to England – where he represented the Reds – in recent weeks, with his future at the Bernabeu far from certain.

Alonso’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and following the arrival of Asier Illarramendi – a player in a similar mould to the experienced campaigner – rumours have suggested that he may be allowed to leave for free next year.

This alerted his former club, Liverpool, as well as Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho – who worked with the midfielder while at Real.

But, Alonso has insisted that now he is returning from injury he is ready to discuss a new deal with the club:

“Now it is time to begin talks about my future at the club. While I was injured it did not feel right to talk.” He told MARCA.

“I am grateful for the fans’ respect and warmth, it means a lot to me. I am very happy. The past five months have been difficult.”

Alonso has spent five months on the sidelines through injury, but returned to first-team action in Real’s 7-3 win against Real Sociedad.
