Manchester United and Chelsea could go head-to-head in a summer transfer tug-of-war for Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik, according to reports from The Express.

The Slovakia international has been one of Serie A’s most highly-rated players for some time, but he looks set to leave Naples this summer after growing frustrated under the management of Rafa Benitez.

The ex-Liverpool coach has used Hamsik more sparingly than the player is used to, which has left him frustrated.

It is understood that he has indicated that he will look to leave if the situation persists, and Napoli are ready to cut him loose if their valuation is met.

With the playmaker having a contract which runs until 2018, a deal for his services will not be cheap, with reports indicating that it could take around £33m to prise him away from the Stadio San Paolo.

United and Chelsea are thought to be two of the frontrunners for his services, with both of the clubs’ managers big fans of Hamsik.

Jose Mourinho is believed to have referred to the 26-year-old as the only player he wants to sign from Italian football in the past, while David Moyes is said to see him as a good addition to his threadbare midfield.
