Ezequiel Garay, BenficaChelsea are set to rival Manchester United in the race for Benfica centre-back Ezequiel Garay, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The Red Devils have been tracking the Argentine international for some time, with rumours emerging that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to launch a summer move.

But, Chelsea are now ready to rival any proposition for the 26-year-old, as they step up their rebuilding plans ahead of the next transfer window.

The Blues are said to be keen to bring in fresh faces to improve their backline, and they see Garay as somebody who can add some stability to the ranks.

Having signed David Luiz from the Portuguese giants during 2011, the two clubs have a solid working relationship, which could be vital in any deal for the star man.

Garay is contracted until 2015, meaning that he is likely to be valued fairly highly by the Lisbon outfit.

United are believed to have sent scouts to assess the defender, amidst concerns that he is not cut out to play at the very highest level.

He endured a tough spell at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid, sometime appearing to out of his depth with the Spanish giants.

However, since his move to Benfica Garay has thrived, quickly becoming one of the team’s vital men.

This has tempted both Chelsea and United, who could be willing to give him one last go on the big stage.
