Europa League tie against Sparta Prague.

The Blues ran out 1-0 winners in the Czech Republic, with second-half substitute Oscar scoring the only goal of the game with just eight minutes remaining.

Chelsea edged the possession stats and created more scoring opportunities than their opponents, but could easily have entered the second leg with the aggregate score level.

Benitez was happy with his team’s performance, but urged them to show more of a killer instinct in front of goal in next week’s tie at Stamford Bridge:

“The first 20 minutes we were in control. We had some half chances. We were in control.” He told Sky Sports.

“After this 20 minutes they were pushing and pushing. The team, as a team, had problems defending.

“We changed a little bit in the second half. I think the concentration of the team was much better, the intensity in defence was much better and then we had more control.

“We have to create more opportunities and the strikers will score more goals.”

Fernando Torres maintained his position as the focal point of Chelsea’s attack, with Demba Ba ineligible for the European campaign.

The Spaniard once again failed to find the back of the net, but was influential in some of the Londoners’ attacking play.

Benitez was happy with the striker’s display, insisting he is about more than just scoring goals:

“Fernando’s (Torres) work rate today was really good and thanks to him the rest of the team, especially the second line of offensive players, could create.

“His job was push and run and keep their defenders deep so he could create space for the other players.

“Everybody expects from a striker just to score goals but he’s doing also a great job for the team.”
