Cech talks up Lampard influence
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech adds to a growing collective voice calling for the Blues to hand over a new contract to England international Frank Lampard, according to Sky Sports.
It seems likely that the Premier League team and the player’s representatives will simply see out the contract to its end, after Lampard’s agent noted that contract negotiations had been unsuccessful so far this season.
Although, Cech remains sanguine about a potential new deal for the midfielder, saying that, “There are still six months to go until the end of the season so we will see whether he stays or not. I’m not a director but if he keeps playing like that he will keep asking about the extension.
“The team has changed, his age has changed, but he’s still important for the team,” Cech continued.
Now that Lampard is a little older, Cech sees the player’s value beyond his durability, preferring to praise his impact instead.
“He might not start every game or play every game but when he plays he plays well with his quality and experience, so this is something that is great to see,” Cech added.
“I’ve known him for a long time and he’s been a fantastic player for the club, and he continues to be so.”
The Blues’ interim manager Rafael Benitez has also responded to questions relating to the player’s future, however the manager seems to have little influence in contractual proceedings.
“He’s under contract, he’s a good player. He has to keep performing and he’s fine. I think it’s not an issue at the moment,” Benitez said.
