Jose Mourinho has moved to deny speculation that Ashley Cole could leave Chelsea in January, according to talkSPORT.

The England defender has not started since Chelsea’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle last month, with Jose Mourinho opting to play recognised right back Cesar Azpilicueta in Cole’s usual left back spot.

Cole has just six months remaining on his current Chelsea contract, and has even been linked with a January move away.

Some stories have linked Cole with a mega money move to the MLS, with New York Red Bulls and LA Galaxy both said to be interested.

The 32-year-old is desperate for regular first team football in order to prove to Roy Hodgson he should go to next summer’s World Cup as first choice England left back ahead of Leighton Baines.

“I don’t know if Ashley Cole will start this game but he will start soon,” Mourinho said ahead of Wednesday’s match with Sunderland

“Any player that normally starts matches – naturally are not the happiest in the camp. He deserves to play but he has to wait for his opportunity.

Mourinho also looked to distance himself from stories linking the club with a move for a new left back in January.

“I trust what I have. We are fine with what we have,” he added.
