Wayne Rooney has emerged as Jose Mourinho’s next transfer target, as Chelsea look set to break the bank to land the troubled Manchester United star, the MailOnline reports.

David Moyes desperately wants to keep the player he first managed at Everton, but could not categorically state whether Rooney wanted to stay at Old Trafford.

Former United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, claimed Rooney had a transfer request rejected by the club – something which the player himself denies.

Moyes told the assembled media at his first press conference as Manchester United manager, that the player was not for sale at any price and could only confirm he was training well and in good shape.

Rooney currently lies fourth in a list of the club’s all-time leading goalscorers on 197 goals – 52 behind record-holder Sir Bobby Charlton.

Chelsea would offer United £30million for the player – a figure that matches the fee United paid for the then 18-year-old England striker in 2004, plus wages of £240,000-a-week, worth an astonishing £60m in a five-year deal.

Rooney is not the only big name Premier League striker linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge, as Liverpool’s Luis Suarez is also reportedly on Mourinho’s radar.

Suarez faces the prospect of playing no European football next season at all and that could be a key factor in Chelsea making a successful £40m bid for the unsettled Uruguayan.
