Chelsea chief Jose Mourinho says that it “hurts” him to leave Juan Mata out of his starting XI, and that he wants the midfielder to succeed.

Despite the Spaniard having been voted as the Blues’ best player over the last two seasons, ‘The Special One’ has not used him as one of his key men since arriving at the club over the summer.

The Portuguese coach immediately bombed Mata out of his first-team squad, before reluctantly calling him back into action.

However, uncertainty surrounding Mata’s future has since continued, with rumours of a move away from the club having populated gossip columns for some time.

A switch to any of a number of top sides in the coming weeks has been mooted, but Mourinho has hinted that he is keen to keep his playmaker by insisting that he does not want to leave him out and that he wants him to be a success in the blue shirt:

“I try to do my job forgetting I’m a soft heart, pretending that I’m a hard heart,” he is quoted by The Guardian.

“Many times it hurts me, not just with him, with decisions I have to make. But I think to do my job in the best way … thinking the team more important than any player. When I have to make a decision I always try to be a cold one, icy, analyse the situation and try to make the best decision for the team … putting the person secondary.

“But yes, it hurts me. He’s a good kid, he works hard, not an easy situation for him not to be playing every time. He started nine matches in the Premier League, had lots of minutes on the pitch. I love it if he does well. That’s what I want.”
