Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was critical of his side’s defensive showing following their 3-1 Champions League quarter-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Although they netted what could ultimately be a vital away goal through Eden Hazard, the Blues slipped to defeat thanks to an Ezequiel Lavezzi effort, a David Luiz own goal and a late strike from substitute Javier Pastore.

‘The Special One’ has recently praised the work of his backline this season, highlighting their contribution to his side’s domestic and continental achievements, but after the final whistle at the Parc des Princes, Mourinho was critical of their showing:

“I say ridiculous. You say sloppy, I say ridiculous.” He told Sky Sports.

“After the cross comes (for the first goal), we assist the striker and there’s no one going for the ball in the crucial position. In the second, it’s one of my players on the goal and that’s unlucky.

“But the way the team were positioned defensively was not correct. And finally, the third one is even more sloppy. Ridiculous.”

Chelsea will host PSG in the return leg next week knowing that a 2-0 win will be enough to book a spot in the last four by virtue of the away goals rule, and Mourinho is not giving up securing a place in the next round:

“It’s a difficult job. It’s not impossible.” He added.

“Nothing is impossible but it’s difficult. They are the kind of team – with the players they have – out of nothing they can score goals. So it will not be an easy job,” he said.

“We are not a team full of talent to score lots of goals, especially at this level – but you never know.”

I hope that Chelsea will be in the semifinals of the Champions League because it’s a better team. :D
