Jose Mourinho is ready to make a personal plea to get Thibaut Courtois to return to Chelsea next season and fight Petr Cech for a starting berth, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Belgian goalkeeper is coming to the end of his third season on loan at Atletico Madrid, and is expected to extend his Blues contract despite having never made an appearance for the club.

Upon his 2011 arrival from Genk Courtois was immediately sent to Spain, where he has played regularly and developed into one of Europe’s top young stoppers.

Another campaign in Madrid is believed to be Courtois’ preference as he looks to continue to build his reputation and experience, but Mourinho wants him back next term.

‘The Special One’ is thought to be worried at a lack of options beyond Cech, who is now entering the latter stages of his career.

He wants Courtois to challenge the Czech glovesman for a starting role, which he believes will improve both players.

However the 21-year-old is thought to be desperate for guaranteed action.

The Portuguese coach is understood to be waiting until after the Champions League final – which Atletico beat Chelsea to reach – to talk to the player, and is hopeful that a personal approach will be enough to get him back to London.
