Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has once again reiterated his desire to bring a top class striker to the club this summer.

The Blues’ goalscoring record is some way off of Liverpool and Manchester City’s, contributing heavily to their elimination from the race for the Premier League title – which was effectively sealed with a 0-0 home draw against Norwich on Sunday.

Mourinho’s current forward line is far from cheap – Fernando Torres cost £50m in 2011 – but the Portuguese coach has been critical of his options on many occasions this term.

A move for Atletico Madrid hot-shot Diego Costa is being mooted, while Edinson Cavani of Paris Saint-Germain is also another target seen as able to provide the goals that have been missing this term.

‘The Special One’ feels that with more firepower his team would have beaten the sides they struggled against this season and may well still be in the running for the league trophy:

“Against the teams that are more defensive, more aggressive, more worried about trying to keep a clean sheet than really to play, we keep saying the same,” he is quoted by the Daily Mail.

“We have good players, but we don’t have the kind of striker able to, in a short space, to make an action, to score a goal, to open the gate.

“In these kind of matches you just need to open the gate. When you open the gate, the gate is open and you go win much more. We weren’t able to do that.

“We have to try to win as a team, to improve as a team, but also add the attacking player with that killer instinct and the number of goals that push teams to different levels.

“It’s something our club is going to try (to do), respecting obviously that we have good strikers.”
