Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is willing to put his search for a new striker on hold in the hope of landing Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney at the end of the season, according to reports from The Telegraph.

The Blues boss has been heavily linked with swoops for a number of centre-forwards in recent months after growing frustrated with his misfiring attacking trio of Samuel Eto’o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres.

Rooney was The Special One’s main target during the last transfer window, but multiple bids for the England international were knocked back by the Red Devils – despite the player himself having set his sights on a transfer.

Regardless of having put his issues in the past, the 28-year-old is yet to pen a new contract at Old Trafford, which could see him enter the final year of his deal in six months’ time.

Mourinho believes that he can take advantage of this to snap up the powerful front-man for a reasonable fee.

Rooney’s future at United is far from clear, with the club’s current struggles leading to rumours that he may not extend his stay if they miss out on Champions League qualification.

Chelsea are also interested in Diego Costa and Gonzalo Higuain, but are unlikely to move for either this month.
