Jose Mourinho has written off Chelsea’s chances of winning the title this season, claiming that a second placed finish would be a brilliant achievement for his side, reports the Daily Star.

The Blues could draw level with title favourites Manchester City with victory at the Etihad tonight, but Mourinho still doesn’t consider his side to be genuine title contenders.

Mourinho claims City are already a complete team, while Chelsea’s rebuilding job won’t be done until next season.

Mourinho believes his side will be ready to go head-to-head with Pellegrini’s side next season, and believes a second placed finish this time around would be a bonus for his side.

“If we finish second it’s fantastic,” Mourinho said.

“If we finished second doing the formation work, it’s an acceleration of our process.

“It’s good. City are complete. They have everything good. We are not favourites to win any competition.

“The speech will change completely next pre season. This season, we are just candidates to win the next match.

“Next pre-season, on day one, I will say Chelsea are a candidate to win the Premier League.

“This season I won’t say that. It’s not what we feel or what we’re working for.

“If we win or if we lose against City, I don’t think we’re candidates.

“If we win, obviously, we’re the same points as City.

“If we lose the distance is six. It doesn’t matter. It is not what concerns me.

“What concerns me is my team playing well and trying to get the best possible results, feel the improvements.

“And next pre-season, you will hear me say something completely different.”
