Frank Lampard says that he will consider retiring from football this summer if he does not agree a new deal at Chelsea.

The veteran midfielder was recently named on the Blues’ released list, but has been linked with a fresh contract at Stamford Bridge after the World Cup.

Lampard is known to be keen to pen a fresh one-year agreement with the west London club, but nothing is likely to be finalised until after this summer’s showpiece tournament with England.

The 35-year-old has also been linked with a moves to other top European sides, as well as clubs in America’s MLS, but he has revealed that if he does not extend his stay at Chelsea he may well opt to call time on his playing career:

“I don’t know if I’ll be at Chelsea next season, I’d like to carry on for two or three more years, but it would be good to end on a high.” He is quoted by The Metro.

“So, if that means it all ends tomorrow, I wouldn’t have any regrets. You know your shelf life, so I started to mentally prepare when I hit 30.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, so there’s a part of me that’s looking forward to the future.

“I feel ready to handle it, because I’ve got other things.”

Chelsea have recently extended another ageing star’s contract in the shape of John Terry, but they have also shown a willingness to axe established names with Ashley Cole due to leave on a free in a few weeks’ time.
