Fernando Torres is set to have a scan on his knee today, and has already been ruled out of Spain’s World Cup qualifiers after limping out of Chelsea‘s easy 4-0 win in Bucharest, reports the Daily Mail.

The Spanish forward – who also discovered yesterday he will face no further disciplinary action for his scratch on Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen – limped out of the Champions League group game after just 11 minutes, being replaced by Samuel Eto’o.

Despite the fact he would have been suspended for the trip to Norwich at the weekend anyway, Torres got the nod to start in Bucharest last night after a lively performance at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed it was not a serious injury, the likes of which his team suffered last week when midfielder Marco van Ginkel damaged his cruciate at Swindon.

“The doctor is very confident it’s not a big injury, like we had with Marco van Ginkel, it’s something in his knee, his ligament, and we have to wait for the scan,” Mourinho said.

“He knows that he doesn’t play against Norwich on Sunday. He knows that he cannot go to the national team.

“He knows he has 15 days until the next match he can play, which is against Cardiff. Let’s see the scan. If the injury is an injury for 15 days, I think he’ll be fine. That’s okay.

“The problem is if it’s more time and it’s a pity for the guy, because he’s in a very good moment. He played fantastic against Tottenham. Today he started the game because he deserved to start the game. It’s a pity, but that’s football.”

Chelsea got back to winning ways in the Champions League with an easy 4-0 win in Romania, courtesy of two Ramires goals either side of half time, a bizarre own goal and a trademark Frank Lampard finish in added time.
