Chelsea have offered captain John Terry a fresh one year contract, but on half of his current earnings, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Blues centre-back has been, arguably, one of the Premier League’s best defenders this term, with his rejuvenated displays under Jose Mourinho having helped the Londoners into title contention with just four games remaining.

But his form has not been enough to force Chelsea’s hierarchy to alter their stance on ageing players.

The club have a policy that outfield stars over the age of 30 will only be offered single-season extensions on a reduced wage as they look to usher in a new era and cut back on their lavish spending.

Terry – now 33 – falls into that category, and now faces an uncertain future with his current contract due to expire in a few months’ time.

The experienced enforcer is believed to be keen to stay, but it remains unclear as to whether he will be willing to take such a drastic cut on his earnings.

Turkish giants Galatasaray are said to be waiting in the wings with a lucrative offer, while a number of other Premier League sides may look to tempt Terry with large deals.
