Thibaut Courtois has plunged his Chelsea future into doubt by suggesting that a return to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid this summer may be unwise.

The Belgian goalkeeper is about to cap his third successive season at the Vicente Calderon by taking part in the Champions League final fresh off of helping his adopted side to La Liga glory.

His impressive displays in Madrid have led to talk that Jose Mourinho is ready to re-call the 22-year-old and make his number one ahead of Petr Cech for the 2014/15 campaign.

But speaking to BBC Sport, Courtois revealed that moving back to Stamford Bridge at this point may not be the “healthiest thing” for him and his senior team-mate:

“The two of us want to play everything. Nobody will be happy to play in only the League Cup or FA Cup,

“Things are unclear at the moment.”

“I have the biggest respect for Petr Cech. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world so I think putting him and me in the same team is not the healthiest thing in the world.

“We will see in the next week if we can sit together with Chelsea to find something for next year, find out what they want, what my desire is. We will see.”

Courtois is set to represent his home nation at the World Cup this summer and is thought of as one of the world’s top young stoppers.
