John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole will have to wait until April to discover if they are to be offered new contracts at Chelsea, according to the Metro.

The trio are all out of contract at the end of the season, and Blues owner Roman Abramovich has no desire to open talks over new deals until Easter at the earliest.

This is still the case, despite Jose Mourinho claiming Terry has been the Premier League’s most outstanding defender this season.

Frank Lampard finds himself in an identical situation to last season, as he was forced to wait until May to discover whether he would be offered a new deal.

All have played a significant part for Mourinho this season, with a total of 77 appearances between them.

Mourinho remains keen to lower the average age of the Blues squad, but has offered nothing but praise for club captain Terry.

“I was not expecting him to be the best centre-half in England. Not after the season he had last year. I was not expecting it,” Mourinho said.

“I would like to see him playing this way until the end of the season.”

Terry’s performances have seen people suggest a possible international retirement U-turn in time for the World Cup.

Terry retired from international duty in 2012, but Mourinho would not be drawn on the topic, adding: “People talk about England and the World Cup is between him and Roy [Hodgson], not with me.”
