Chelsea are considering another big move for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, according to reports from The Express.

The England international was seen as the Blues’ top transfer target last summer, but after months of chasing and numerous bids from Jose Mourinho a deal failed to materialise.

Since then Rooney has been welcomed back into the Red Devils’ first-team after he edged towards a switch and has been rewarded with a mega money contract.

But his future is once again the subject of some doubt, with new boss Louis van Gaal’s plans as of yet unknown.

Given his relationship with Robin van Persie in the Dutch national side – LVG is the manager of the Oranje – it is expected that the former Arsenal man will be handed the role as the focal point of the team.

Mourinho has remained keen on the 28-year-old despite his summer 2013 disappointment, and with cash having been brought in by the sales of David Luiz, Juan Mata and Kevin De Bruyne since January, he has the money to fund a £40m swoop.

A move would have been seen as highly unlikely a matter of months ago, but Chelsea are hopeful that they can land Rooney with a big bid likely to tempt van Gaal as he plots his own transfer plans.
