Manchester United to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have made the England international their top target this transfer window, but, as of yet, have failed to convince their Premier League rivals to sell.

Two bids have already been knocked back by the Red Devils, who are keen to keep the unsettled attacker.

But, recent speculation has suggested that Mourinho could test their willingness to hold on to ‘Wazza’ by offering Mata in exchange.

The Spaniard has been a key player in West London for the past few seasons, but his first-team spot is now under major threat with the arrival of ‘The Special One’ and the imminent signing of Brazilian winger Willian.

When asked about the possibility of a Mata/Rooney exchange by The Metro, Mourinho replied:

“That’s hypothetical, because they didn’t ask.

“The two answers we got from Man United is “we don’t accept the bid”, “we’re not interested in selling the player.””

Although Chelsea are still pursuing Rooney, a deal for Anzhi Makhachkala’s Samuel Eto’o is said to be nearing completion.

Does a Juan Mata/Wayne Rooney swap make sense for everybody?
