Chelsea look set to beat Manchester United to Roma’s Mehdi Benatia with talks between the Londoners and Roma scheduled, according to reports from The Express.

Although the Moroccan centre-back insisted during the week that he will not be leaving the Stadio Olimpico, it’s understood that the club’s sporting director Walter Sabatini is in England to discuss transfer business.

Rumours suggest that a £30m deal for Benatia is on the agenda, with Jose Mourinho ready to backtrack on claims that he will not be making any more additions to his squad this summer.

The Blues have added promising defender Kurt Zouma to their ranks, but with David Luiz having been sold ‘The Special One’ is said to be concerned at a lack of cover.

United are also keen on the ex-Udinese star, but a lack of Champions League football at Old Trafford is believed to be seen as a major drawback.
