Chelsea are set to give Patrick van Aanholt a fresh start at the club at the end of the season, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Dutch left-back is currently enjoying a loan spell with Vitesse Arnhem – whom he joined last January – and has been impressive in the Eredivisie.

Despite signing for the Blues in 2009, the 23-year-old has made minimal impact in West London, and is currently on his fifth temporary switch away from Stamford Bridge.

However, he is understood to have held talks with Jose Mourinho over the weekend to clarify his role at the club going forward.

With Ashley Cole looking likely to leave over the summer, ‘The Special One’ will be short of cover on the left side of his defence.

He is thought to see Van Aanholt as a good option to have in his squad, and is ready to offer him another chance at the club.

However, Mourinho may face a battle to persuade the one-time Holland international to stay, with the player himself having previously displayed reservations about his future at Chelsea:

“I still think Chelsea are a nice club but with their millions, there’s so many (players) they can buy.

“It makes the chance to really break through as a young talent quite small.”

Good player, but we should go for Luke Shaw. He’s a home grown English player and a very bright young lad. A Chelsea fan too :)
