Eden Hazard says that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was right to criticise him after some below par displays towards the end of last season.

The Belgian attacker launched a thinly veiled attack on the Blues’ playing style after their Champions League elimination, to which ‘The Special One’ responded by questioning his star’s work rate.

Mourinho insinuated that Hazard was not enough of a team player and that his lack of defensive effort had cost Chelsea in some big games.

Despite this the 23-year-old was named as the club’s Player of the Year recently, and is thought of as one of Europe’s top talents.

Although he did not respond directly to Mourinho’s comments at the time, Hazard believes that his boss was right to criticise him:

“It’s true and it’s good. I prefer it when we speak like this, rather than saying things like: “He’s the best and he doesn’t need to work”,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“I know maybe I have to do better in training or on the pitch. I want to score more and help the team score more goals and next season I hope we can be better.

“I try to play like I did when I was a young boy playing in my garden. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s not so good but I try to always make sure I give my best to help the team, even if I am not having the best game myself.

“When you are young, you sometimes play one good game and then one bad game. This season I was able to be more consistent which is good for me.”

Hazard is set to appear for Belgium at the World Cup this summer and is also wanted by French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
