Fernando Torres (Chelsea)

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has conceded that his performances since joining the Londoners in 2011 has been far below the standards expected from him, reports the Express.

The Spaniard arrived at Stamford Bridge from Liverpool for the then British record transfer fee of £50million, but has completely failed to make any sort of lasting impact. Indeed, Torres’ most memorable contribution this season was meddled by an apparent attempt to tear Jan Vertonghen’s  face off, and a subsequent sending-off.

And speaking to Chelsea TV, Torres admits he is yet to justify his price-tag.

“The people are looking at me thinking I should do much better and it’s true. The reason you pay that money for someone is that he has shown in the past he is worth that,” Torres said.

“Now what you have to show is you can have the same value or even more value for things you have done at Chelsea.”

Despite scoring 22 goals in all competitions last season, the striker’s scoring ability seemed only to thrive when Chelsea looked comfortable against weaker opposition. Due to these circumstances, Blues fans have questioned coach Mourinho’s choice to send Belgian powerhouse Romelu Lukaku on loan, but Torres vows to silence his critics.

“I know I have many things to do at this club to give the confidence back to the owner,” he added.

“I signed a five-and-a-half year contract and I’m sure the future can only be better.”

Is Torres the right man to spearhead Jose’s attack?
