Thibaut Courtois wants Jose Mourinho to give him a fair chance of replacing Petr Cech as Chelsea number one, before agreeing to return to the club, reports the Daily Mail.

The Belgium international is in his third consecutive season at Atletico Madrid, where he is on loan from the Blues.

His performances in La Liga have earned him widespread recognition as one of the top young goalkeepers in Europe, and on Monday night he was named La Liga’s goalkeeper of 2012-13.

Chelsea hope Courtois will return to Stamford Bridge next season, but the 21-year-old wants to be given assurances about his first team position, and that he will be given a fair crack of the whip to claim the number one spot from Petr Cech.

Chelsea view Courtois as a future number one, but with Cech still only 31, there is a feeling that should Courtois return it will be as an understudy.

Courtois feels the decision on who should be the club’s number one should be based on current form and performances rather than reputation, and has so far been unwilling to sign the contract extension offered by Chelsea, that would see him stay at the club until 2019.

Courtois remains settled in Spain, and would be happy to stay at Atletico on a permanent basis where he knows he will be viewed as automatic first choice.

He still has two years to run on his current Chelsea deal, but the Stamford Bridge club hope to tie the player down to a long term deal with him being currently valued at £20million.
