Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has responded angrily to claims from Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet that he wants to be Belgium’s number one for the World Cup.

The two stoppers are in direct competition to occupy the role between the sticks for their nation in Brazil later this year, and both have strong claims to be the number one.

Courtois has been the first choice for the Belgian side throughout the qualification campaign, producing a number of top performances to aid their passage into the showpiece tournament.

But Mignolet has been mightily impressive at club level this term, helping Liverpool to their current position in the Premier League’s top four.

The Reds’ glovesman is keen to use this to edge ahead of his rival over the course of the next few months as the World Cup looms on the horizon.

Courtois – who is on loan at Atletico Madrid from Chelsea – feels that his compatriot needs to show more team spirit and follow the lead from Spain’s goalkeepers – who are backing Iker Casillas even though he is not playing regularly for Real Madrid:

“In Spain, I hear no goalkeeper saying they’re aiming for the place of Casillas,” he is quoted by The Express.

“Not De Gea, not Valdes, not Reina. It’s the opposite – they back Casillas.

“Simon can say whatever he wants, but I think I’ve already saved enough points for Belgium and I’m playing good games for Atletico. He has to stay humble and respectful.”
