Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins believes that his old club would be Premier League champions now if they had signed Diego Costa last summer.

The Blues are rumoured to be closing in on a deal for the Brazilian-born Spain international, who has emerged as one of European football’s very best strikers on the back of a terrific season with Atletico Madrid.

Costa has netted 27 La Liga goals to leave his team top of their division heading into the last game of the season, which is a massive contrast to the 19 Jose Mourinho has seen his trio of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o notch.

The failings of their front-men does illustrate just why Chelsea trailed champions Manchester City and Liverpool, with the Sky Blues having got 42 goals from Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, while Brendan Rodgers watched Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge smash in a combined 52 efforts.

Former Stamford Bridge midfielder and assistant manager Wilkins believes that had his old side has a top class striker like Costa they would have coasted to the title:

“Costa’s a little bit in the mould of [Alvaro] Negredo. Negredo before Christmas was absolutely outstanding.” He told talkSPORT.

“I think this young man is in a very similar mould to him. He likes to get stuck in, he’s physical and I think that’s what Chelsea have lacked this season. They’ve lacked an abundance of goals from the forward players.

“If Chelsea had a 20-goal man they would have won the title comfortably. But that wasn’t the case and hopefully they can address that situation.”
