It may actually come as news to many that Paulo Ferreira actually retired as recently as 2013.

On the other hand, some probably still believe the Portuguese full back is contracted to Chelsea, collecting his weekly pay packet in a fashion only Winston Bogarde would be proud of.

Last night however, Ferreira was rewarded for his nine years of service at Stamford Bridge with a Special Recognition award. The defender was a surprise winner in an evening where Cesar Azpilicueta and Eden Hazard were named Players’ Player and Fans’ Player of the Year respectively. After such a long time in the footballing wilderness, Ferreira’s achievement was discussed so much on Twitter that his name began to trend.

Inevitably, some football fans couldn’t believe that the defender had actually won an award.

However, a selection of Chelsea fans were quick to defend and even praise Ferreira for his time at the club.

Ferreira may have managed to endear himself to a section of Chelsea’s fanbase through his service to the club. But whether his performances at Stamford Bridge really merited a Special Recognition award remains more than a little dubious.
