Inter Milan have stepped up their pursuit of Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, according to the Daily Mail.

The Italian giants sent sporting director Piero Ausilio to Stamford Bridge for last nights Champions League clash with Galatasary, to run the rule over the Spaniard.

Last week Ausilio hinted the former Liverpool striker’s wages may prove a stumbling block, however he remains high on a list of transfer targets as Inter look to rebuild under the ownership of Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir.

Inter manager Walter Mazzarri hopes to boost his attacking options after a disappointing season in Serie A, although a defensive midfielder remains a priority, with Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel a reported target.

Torres only came on as an 86th minute substitute in the win over Galastasary, and is aware Jose Mourinho is targeting new strikers in the summer.

Torres has two years remaining on his Chelsea contract, but has been heavily linked with a move away from the Premier League this summer after another season struggling for league goals and regular first team football.

Meanwhile, Mikel has three years left to run on his current deal, but has been displaced by January signing Nemanja Matic, while £8million summer signing Marco Van Ginkel is close to returning to full fitness after a serious knee injury.
