Liverpool and Chelsea are ready to battle it out for the signature of Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis in January according to media outlets in France, the Daily Mail reports.

French television channel Canal Plus claim both clubs sent scouts over to watch the impressive striker in action in his side’s 1-0 defeat at Paris St Germain on Sunday, with a view to making bids in the upcoming transfer window.

Commenting on stories that he may be sold this winter, Gomis was quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “I have heard it, the president said I will get transferred or will renew my contract before the end of the January transfer window.”

The 27-year-old French international striker has scored 10 goals in 18 games this season, helping Lyon to second in the Ligue 1 table, behind leaders PSG only on goal difference.

Lyon are currently in financial trouble and could offload more players to ease their problems as they did in the summer by selling Hugo Lloris to Tottenham.

Chelsea have been linked with a whole host of strikers as the club continue to rely heavily on the inconsistent Fernando Torres and have failed to replace the departed Didier Drogba. Gomis could be seen as a player in the mould of the powerful Ivorian who was a huge success in the Premier League.

Liverpool have similar issues in that there is lack of support for their catalyst Luis Suarez. Brendan Rodgers is understood to be keen on securing the services of Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge, but if a deal falls through then he could intensify his pursuit of Gomis.
