Chelsea chief Jose Mourinho believes that Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko is more deserving of the PFA Player of the Year award than Luis Suarez of Liverpool.

The Reds striker was named as the division’s top player two weeks ago on the back of a terrific season which has seen him net 31 goals and notch 12 assists in 32 Premier League games to spearhead a shock title push for his team.

Although Suarez divides opinion due to his playing style and numerous problems in the past, there have been few who have argued with his award – to which he will add the Footballer of the Year trophy at the Football Writers’ gala this week.

But Mourinho believes that City striker Dzeko – who has often been third choice at the Etihad Stadium this season – is the man who should have got the prize:

“My player of the year would be always from the champions so if that is Manchester City, I would choose Dzeko.” He is quoted by The Mirror.

“He was the third-choice striker in the beginning of the season, but when the team needed him, in crucial moments of the season, he made the difference. Sixteen goals for the third striker is spectacular.

“He’s not just a goalscorer. He assists, he plays, he behaves, he’s fair, he doesn’t dive, doesn’t try to put opponents in the stands with accumulation of cards. I’d choose Dzeko.”

But Mourinho went on to say that if Liverpool win the title, in what would have to be a major twist on the final day of the season, he would hand the award to Steven Gerrard:

“If Liverpool win [the title] – and it would not take a miracle – I would go for Steven Gerrard. He has had a very good season in a position where he is important for a team, changing his profile as a player.”
