Petr Cech delighted with solid Chelsea
Their 1-0 Boxing Day win against Norwich at Carrow Road saw the Blues keep a second consecutive clean sheet in the Premier League, making it six points from two games over the Christmas schedule.
Chelsea haven’t enjoyed consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League since November 2011. With Benitiez’s arrival it seems that a new defensive resilience has followed.
Cech noted that previously, before their new manager arrived, “We were conceding too many goals, playing really open.” Cech continued to say that “He [Benitez] came with slightly different ideas, it’s working so far, and hopefully it will continue.”
It is thus no coincidence that “Suddenly, we are defending as a team much better – that is the key. Now we are back to our ways when we are difficult to score against.”
“I think we need the whole team to defend. We have really attacking-minded players. Sometimes, we were not making the right choices in terms of defensive transitions and that is what has improved. We are passing more and organising [ourselves].”
He might have the acceptance of Chelsea stalwart Cech, but Benitez still has a way to go in order to persuade the Stamford Bridge faithful to change their minds regarding his tactical abilities.
