Chelsea legend and current Brighton boss has attacked the appointment of Rafael Benitez as manager at Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Uruguayan midfielder had a stint with the Blues between 1997 and 2001 and still has a good rapport with the fans at Chelsea, but now the Seagulls manager has expressed his dismay at the club’s decision.

Poyet is concerned the appointment could have a detrimental effect on his former side’s Premier League campaign. He is also not sure what impact it will have on the club as a whole, as well as the players individually.

“I don’t know what is going to happen. It is not good for the players or the club,” Poyet told Sky Sports.

“The fans don’t want him, that’s what they’ve been showing. And for Benitez, what happens during the time they don’t win?

“I’m feeling very uncomfortable for everybody.”

Benitez has tried to deflect the criticism levelled at him over his instillation as Chelsea manager and defended his decision in an interview with Sky Sports.

“I will do my job and I want to win, and I want to win for this club,” said the former Liverpool man.

“I hope they share those ideas. The fans, apart from that, are with the team.

“They will be with the team and, hopefully, with me in the next games because I will do a professional job and try to win.”

Chelsea are due to make a short trip across to east London this weekend to face West Ham at Upton Park with the side yet to secure a win under Benitez.
