Rafa Benitez has backtracked on comments he made in midweek by praising the Chelsea supporters after the Blues’ home win over West Brom on Saturday.

The Spaniard criticised the Stamford Bridge faithful during a rant on Wednesday night and was roundly booed once again before kick off yesterday.

Chelsea dominated the game in West London yesterday but only managed a 1-0 victory over former Blues coach Steve Clarke’s West Brom side.

Benitez’ side are now five points clear of Arsenal in the Champions League places and are going strong in the FA Cup and Europa League.

However even if Chelsea go on to win two trophies and finish in the top four, the Chelsea fans will refuse to praise the former Liverpool manager after his comments before and during his spell at Stamford Bridge.

Chants of ‘Jose Mourinho’ rang around Stamford Bridge during the game on Saturday as well as Roberto Di Matteo’s name cheered on the 16th minute.

“I was today really pleased with the performance on the pitch and the atmosphere was really good,” Benitez told ITV Sport.

“It was a great performance. The team, for 75 minutes, were in control, good play, good passes and great opportunities.”
