We made it hard for ourselves says Cech
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech feels that his side made hard work of their 3-1 Europa League triumph over Steaua Bucharest.
The Blues trailed their Romanian rivals by one-goal-to-nil after the first leg, but were back on level terms after half-an-hour at Stamford Bridge through Juan Mata.
However, Steaua netted an away goal thanks to Vlad Chiriches on the stroke of half time to set up a tense second period.
Chelsea did enough in the end to book a spot in the quarter-finals, with efforts from John Terry and Fernando Torres securing a 3-2 aggregate victory.
Cech was always confident of progression, but admits that the Londoners made it hard for themselves in both legs:
“It’s a big win because we wanted to qualify for the next round and I don’t think this was the stage we wanted to go out of the competition.” He told ITV.
“We made it hard for ourselves losing in Bucharest.
“When they made it 1-1 we knew we’d have to score twice but at the weekend we made up a two-goal deficit (against Manchester United in the FA Cup) at Old Trafford, so at half-time we knew we could score the goals.”
Torres responded to the criticism he has received from some fans with a solid performance over the 90 minutes.
Despite the striker missing a late penalty-kick, Cech praised his efforts and the way he took his goal:
“He was working hard and took his chance great,
“It was a pity the penalty didn’t go in for him but the important thing is we scored three goals so we are happy.”
