Everton are close to signing Lero Fer after agreeing a fee with FC Twente for the midfielder, according to Sky Sports.

Toffees boss David Moyes has been looking to reinforce his midfield engine room for some time and finally decided to dip his toes into the January transfer market with a £7 million bid for Fer.

The 23-year-old, who started his career at fellow Eredivisie side Feyenoord, has become an integral member of Steve McClaren’s Twente side since arriving at the De Grolsch Veste in 2011.

Fer, nicknamed the ’The Bouncer’ on account of imposing physical stature, will head to Merseyside to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical before finalising the switch.

It will come as a relief for Moyes after he fought off a number of top European clubs to sign the Holland international, especially after he failed to acquire Club Brugge’s Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe in the summer.

However, Fer’s impending arrival will lead to speculation that Marouane Fellaini will leave Goodison Park this month after it was reported that his contract contains a £22m release clause.

The Belgian international has been imperious form for Everton this term, attracting the attention of Manchester United and Chelsea, although it looks likely that he will remain at the club until the end of the season.
