Everton are considering an £8m move for heavily criticised Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The England international has been a regular for the Red Devils over the past couple of seasons, but his performances have not always made him popular with fans at club and international level.

Despite this, Roberto Martinez is a big admirer of the 24-year-old and is keen to entice him to Merseyside.

New United boss Louis van Gaal made the playmaker his captain for a recent pre-season friendly against Roma, yet rumours suggest that he may be cut by the Dutchman as he puts plans in place for his final squad – which he intends to announce to his payers in the coming days.

Martinez coached Cleverley at Wigan during a loan spell in 2010/11, and has been credited with boosting his development immeasurably.

Should he be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford the Spaniard will move to draft him in.

Meanwhile Everton’s loan move for Chelsea winger Christian Atsu is on the verge of collapse after a breakdown in negotiations.
