Everton are planning an end of season £6m move for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, according to reports from The Metro.

The England international has emerged as a top target for Roberto Martinez amid the uncertainty at Old Trafford as he steps up his own plans to build on impressive debut season on Merseyside.

Although Cleverley has been criticised by chunks of United’s supports, he is still considered to be a talented playmaker and could well represent the Three Lions at this summer’s World Cup.

Martinez is looking to add young and hungry players to his squad, and sees the 24-year-old as a good signing as he plots for a season of domestic and European action.

United are thought to be keen to keep their academy graduate, yet with a new manager due to take over in the coming months it remains unclear as to whether or not Cleverley has a future at the club.

Everton may also look to move for Alexander Buttner.

The left-back has been seen as Patrice Evra’s understudy for some time, but he may slip down the pecking order in the coming transfer window with Luke Shaw a target.
