Everton are still confident that they can seal a loan deal for Monaco striker Lacina Traore, despite Radamel Falcao’s season-ending injury, according to reports from the Liverpool Echo.

The Colombian superstar damaged his knee in a recent fixture, which looks set to rule him out until the start of next season – plunging the Toffees’ transfer hopes into doubt.

Traore recently signed for the Ligue 1 side from Anzhi Makhachkala, and was immediately made available for loan due to a fear of a lack of playing time between now and the end of the season due to the presence of the club’s talismanic forward.

However, the hitman’s absence has led to speculation that the Ivorian ace would be thrust into first-team action sooner than predicted.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez says that Falcao’s injury has been an untimely blow, but that a deal to sign Traore is close to completion.

“We’ll have to see what happens. We’ve got the work permit granted and we’re all quite excited at the prospect of welcoming Lacina to Everton,” Martinez said.

“Obviously it was shocking news around European football when a player of Falcao’s quality gets a long term injury, but I hope any decision on any other players isn’t based on an injury to another team-mate.

“We’ll have to wait. We’re really far down the line now and it would be a real disappointment not to be able to complete it.”
