Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Ross Barkley will eventually have to leave Everton to fulfil his potential.

The 20-year-old starlet has burst onto the Premier League scene this season under the guidance of Roberto Martinez, establishing himself as one of the division’s top young players.

His performances have even earned him recognition on the international stage, with many urging England manager Roy Hodgson to make him a part of his final squad for the World Cup.

As well as this, the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal have been linked with big money raids for his signature.

Carragher – a boyhood Everton fan – would like nothing more than to see Barkley remain at Goodison Park, but he believes that he will ultimately have to move on to reach the heights he is destined for:

“Barkley’s been one of the best young players in the country this season,” he is quoted by talkSPORT.

“He’s got a chance of going to Brazil with England, and deservedly so.

“I would like to see him stay at Everton for the next two or three years, and maybe try to win a trophy there.

“Eventually though, he’ll have to play at the highest level and that’s the Champions League.

“Everton are just knocking on the door but I’m not sure whether they can sustain that.”
