Daily Mail.

The Toffees boss is believed to be concerned by the recent performances of current number one Tim Howard, who was at fault for Sebastien Bassong’s equaliser in their weekend Premier League clash with Norwich.

Current back-up stopper Jan Mucha is out of contract at the end of the season, and his likely exit has forced the Scot into searching for alternatives.

The club have trialed Alex Manninger, formerly of Arsenal, ex-Celtic star Artur Boruc, the Philadelphia Union’s Zac MacMath and Egyptian Adam Mansour in recent weeks, but no concrete deal has been announced.

Moyes believes that Howard, who has made 196 consecutive appearances, will benefit from a new challenger:

“Yes, you need competition for every position and everybody has got to make sure they’re at the top of their game.

“We have to make sure we’re not continually making mistakes that lead to goals.”

Howard arrived at Goodison Park during 2003 on loan from domestic rivals Manchester United.

His solid displays persuaded the club to make the deal permanent and he has been first-choice ever since.
